About the Product
Marvelous Nutrition's Savior is the most complete post-workout recovery product in the brand's portfolio, designed as an all-in-one formula for the anabolic window immediately after training. It combines in a single product the three categories of post-workout nutrition with the most documented impact on recovery and muscle growth: high-quality carbohydrates (Cyclic Dextrin® + dextrose + corn starch for rapid glycogen replenishment), all 9 essential amino acids (EAAs) including leucine in an anabolic dose (for maximum muscle protein synthesis via mTORC1), and creatine monohydrate (for PCr resynthesis and anabolic signaling). Supplemented with L-Glutamine (anti-catabolic support), electrolytes (K, Mg, Ca, Na for replenishment of those lost in sweat), and Vitamins B6, D3, and B12 (support for energy and hormonal metabolism). Flavors: Fruit Punch and Pineapple. Gluten-free except for corn starch with sulfites. Vegan (check).
Benefits
The post-workout anabolic window: why the first 30 to 60 minutes after training are critical:
Intense resistance training depletes muscle glycogen (by 40 to 80% depending on intensity and duration), causes mechanical muscle damage to myofibrils (especially after eccentric exercise), elevates cortisol and the catabolic state, and activates repair and protein synthesis pathways (mTORC1, MPS). The immediate post-workout window is the period of greatest muscle insulin sensitivity (GLUT4 transporters are maximally translocated to the membrane by the exercise itself, independently of insulin), making this the moment of greatest efficiency for glucose and amino acid uptake by the muscle. Savior is specifically formulated for this context: ultra-fast absorbing Cyclic Dextrin for immediate glycogen replenishment, complete EAAs with a high dose of leucine for maximum mTORC1 activation, creatine co-ingested with carbohydrates for maximum muscle uptake via insulin spike, and electrolytes for hydroelectrolytic rebalancing.
Cyclic Dextrin® (10g): the next-generation post-workout carbohydrate:
Cyclic Dextrin® (highly branched cyclic dextrin, HBCD) is a next-generation carbohydrate obtained by specific enzymatic treatment of corn amylopectin (branching and cyclization of glucose chains). Its most distinctive technical characteristic is ultra-fast gastric emptying: unlike maltodextrin and dextrose (which have high osmolality and create an osmotic gradient in the stomach that slows their emptying), Cyclic Dextrin has very low osmolality (~1/10 of dextrose's) despite its high molecular weight, resulting in gastric emptying 20% faster than maltodextrin. This means that Cyclic Dextrin passes rapidly from the stomach to the small intestine, where it is quickly hydrolyzed and absorbed as glucose, without causing the gastrointestinal discomfort (nausea, cramps, abdominal distension) often associated with post-workout supplements rich in simple sugars. The study by Takii et al. (2005) documented that Cyclic Dextrin maintained more stable blood glucose levels and higher performance in an endurance test compared to maltodextrin and glucose.
Triple carbohydrate source: Cyclic Dextrin + dextrose + corn starch:
The combination of the three carbohydrate sources covers different absorption speeds and different intestinal absorption sites. Cyclic Dextrin (ultra-fast absorption, low osmolality) ensures the fastest onset of insulin response and muscle glucose uptake. Dextrose (pure glucose, GI = 100) produces the sharpest insulin spike, which is the "key" for maximum creatine and amino acid uptake by the muscle via upregulation of CREAT1 and LAT1/SLC7A5 transporters. Corn starch (slower absorption) sustains glucose and insulin levels for a longer period, extending the post-workout anabolic window beyond the first 30 minutes.
Complete EAAs — all 9 essential amino acids including L-Tryptophan:
Savior includes all 9 essential amino acids that the human body does not synthesize endogenously: L-Leucine, L-Lysine, L-Phenylalanine, L-Valine, L-Threonine, L-Isoleucine, L-Methionine, L-Histidine, and L-Tryptophan (the most frequently omitted in commercial EAA formulas because it is the least stable and most expensive). The presence of L-Tryptophan is relevant because it is a precursor to serotonin (5-HT) and melatonin — its depletion during intense exercise contributes to central fatigue, and post-workout supplementation can support serotonin normalization and nighttime sleep quality. L-Leucine is the most critical EAA for muscle protein synthesis: it has a plasma concentration threshold (~0.7 to 1 mM) above which it maximally activates mTORC1 (via the Ragulator-RAG GTPase complex and SESN2 as a leucine sensor). L-Phenylalanine is a precursor to L-Tyrosine → dopamine → noradrenaline → adrenaline, supporting the recovery of the catecholaminergic axis after the physical stress of training.
Post-workout creatine monohydrate: the window of maximum muscle uptake:
As described in the Creatine Monohydrate section of Marvelous Nutrition, the insulin spike caused by the co-ingestion of carbohydrates (especially dextrose, which has the highest GI) with creatine upregulates the creatine transporter CREAT1 (SLC6A8) in myocyte membranes, maximizing muscle creatine uptake. Co-ingestion of creatine with post-workout Savior (which includes dextrose for the sharpest insulin spike) is physiologically the most efficient window for creatine absorption throughout the day.
L-Glutamine: the anti-catabolic and immune and gut system support:
L-Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in plasma and skeletal muscle (~60% of free muscle amino acids), and one of the first to be mobilized during post-workout muscle catabolism (plasma glutamine levels drop by 20 to 50% after intense training). Glutamine is the preferred fuel for immune system cells (lymphocytes and macrophages) and intestinal mucosal cells (enterocytes), being critical for maintaining intestinal barrier integrity during states of high metabolic stress (intense exercise, caloric deficit). Post-workout L-glutamine supplementation helps reduce muscle catabolism, support immune function (which is transiently suppressed by high-intensity exercise), and protect intestinal mucosal integrity.
Complete electrolytes (K, Mg, Ca, Na) + Vitamins B6, D3, B12: metabolic and rebalancing support:
The inclusion of potassium chloride, magnesium oxide, calcium carbonate, and sodium chloride compensates for electrolyte losses through sweat during training. Potassium is the dominant intracellular cation, essential for the membrane potential of muscle fibers and for glycogen synthesis (glycogen stored in muscle retains water and potassium in a ratio of ~3 to 4g of water + ~0.1 mmol of K per gram of glycogen). Vitamin B6 is a cofactor for amino acid metabolism and neurotransmitter synthesis. Vitamin D3 has receptors in muscle cells and modulates muscle protein synthesis. Vitamin B12 supports energy metabolism and hemoglobin synthesis.
Usage
Recommended dose: Mix 1 serving with 300 to 400 ml of cold water and consume immediately after training (within the first 30 minutes). For maximum results, add a complete protein source (whey, casein, or plant-based protein) to the same post-workout meal to ensure a full supply of amino acids for muscle synthesis (Savior provides EAAs but not complete protein in a conventional training dose). Flavors: Fruit Punch and Pineapple.
