Benefits
The Ayurvedic tradition for kidney and urinary health: Himalaya's multi-plant approach:
Cystone represents Himalaya Wellness's core philosophy: combining multiple plants from the Ayurvedic tradition (traditional Indian medicine, with over 5000 years of history and recognized by the WHO) with modern scientific validation, creating multi-botanical formulas with synergistic mechanisms of action. The 8 plants in Cystone have been selected by Ayurvedic medicine for centuries of empirical use to support kidney and urinary health, and Himalaya Wellness has complemented this knowledge with clinical and pharmacological studies documenting the mechanisms of action of each ingredient.
Didymocarpus pedicellata (Shilapushpa) 130mg: the main litholytic and antimicrobial agent:
Didymocarpus pedicellata (Shilapushpa, "stone flower" in Sanskrit — a name evocative of its traditional use in kidney stones) is the anchor ingredient in the Cystone formula and the most studied of its components. It has two main mechanisms of action: litholytic (ability to reduce kidney stone formation by inhibiting the crystallization of calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate, the two main compounds of the most common kidney stones) and antimicrobial (inhibits the growth of uropathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli, the most common agent of urinary tract infections). Preclinical studies have documented that D. pedicellata extract reduced crystalluria (urinary excretion of crystals) and oxalate accumulation in the kidneys in hyperoxaluria models, confirming the pharmacological basis of its traditional use.
Saxifraga ligulata (Pasanabheda) 98mg: the stone dissolver and protector of the urinary mucosa:
Saxifraga ligulata (Pasanabheda, "that which breaks the stone" in Sanskrit) is the second most concentrated ingredient in the formula. It has properties of soothing and protecting the tissues of the urinary mucosa (anti-inflammatory and demulcent effects that reduce the discomfort of stone passage and urethral inflammation), diuretic effect (increases urinary volume, diluting solutes and reducing the saturation of potentially crystallizable salts), and anti-lithogenic action (inhibits the aggregation and growth of oxalate and phosphate crystals, facilitating their elimination in smaller particles). The increased urinary output caused by Saxifraga ligulata "sweeps" crystals and small stones along the urinary tract, facilitating their natural expulsion.
Rubia cordifolia (Manjishtha) 32mg: the anti-inflammatory and protector of the urinary tract:
Rubia cordifolia (Manjishtha, Indian madder) is a climbing plant of the Rubiaceae family whose roots contain anthraquinones (alizarin, purpurin, munjistin) with documented anti-inflammatory (inhibition of COX-2 and NF-κB), antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. In the context of Cystone, R. cordifolia acts as a protector of the urinary tract mucosa against inflammation caused by moving stones and bacterial action in urinary infections. Anthraquinones also have a urine-alkalizing effect (relevant because urinary acidity favors the precipitation of uric acid and some types of oxalate) and an effect of reducing platelet aggregation (improving renal microcirculation).
Achyranthes aspera 32mg: the diuretic that facilitates fluid elimination:
Achyranthes aspera is recognized by the Himalaya Wellness website specifically for its diuretic effect which facilitates the elimination of bodily fluids. The increased urinary output induced by A. aspera is the most direct mechanism for preventing kidney stones: by increasing urine volume, it dilutes the concentration of all solutes (calcium, oxalate, uric acid, phosphate) reducing urinary saturation and the crystallization index — the main risk factor for the formation of new stones. The diuretic effect also accelerates the progression and expulsion of small stones and gravel along the urinary tract.
Cyperus scariosus (Nagarmotha) 32mg: the urinary antiseptic and antispasmodic:
Cyperus scariosus (Nagarmotha, rhizome) is a plant of the Cyperaceae family with urinary antiseptic properties (acts on uropathogenic bacteria) and antispasmodic properties (relaxation of the smooth muscle of the ureter and bladder, relevant for relieving pain and discomfort caused by the progression of stones along the ureter). Ureteral spasm during the passage of a kidney stone is one of the most intense pains described in medicine — the antispasmodic action of Cyperus scariosus helps to alleviate this discomfort.
Onosma bracteatum 32mg + Vernonia cinerea 32mg: the complementary anti-inflammatory and antiseptic pair:
Onosma bracteatum (aerial part) has anti-inflammatory and emollient properties for the urinary mucosa. Vernonia cinerea (whole plant) is known in Ayurvedic medicine for its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and antifebrile properties — the latter being especially relevant in the context of urinary infection with a febrile component (ascending cystitis, pyelonephritis). Together, these two ingredients complement the anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effect of Rubia cordifolia and Achyranthes aspera, creating a multi-plant anti-inflammatory coverage throughout the entire urinary tract.
Purified Shilajit 26mg: the mineral resinoid for urinary tract and prostate health:
Shilajit (Moomiyo, purified mineral resin, "juice of the rocks" in Sanskrit) is a resinous substance of geological and biological origin, collected in the rock crevices of the Himalayas and Hindu Kush, produced by the millennial decomposition of organic plant matter due to pressure and temperature. It contains fulvic acid (its main bioactive compound), humic acid, numerous trace minerals, amino acids, and phytochemicals. In the Cystone formula, Shilajit is specifically highlighted by Himalaya as supporting urinary tract and prostate health in men — fulvic acid has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and mineral-regulating properties that can contribute to reducing prostatic inflammation and maintaining male urological function.
Uses
Recommended dose: Take 1 tablet twice a day with main meals, with a glass of water. Drink plenty of water throughout the day while using Cystone — adequate hydration is the most important factor in preventing kidney stones and in the effectiveness of all diuretic components of the formula. 100 tablets = 50 days of use. Not recommended for children under 14 years of age.
